Arslan: Lebanese People Need "Political Reform"

Arslan: Lebanese People Need

A statement was issued by the President of the "Democratic Lebanese Party," Talal Arslan:

"After everything that has happened and is happening to us, haven’t we yet been convinced that this system produces only unrest, protects only corruption and the corrupt, and that we cannot make even a single step towards reform through it? What the Lebanese people need is one clear title: 'political reform', which is the only way we can develop towards the better." Arslan noted that financial, economic, administrative, and societal corruption is directly linked to political reform as the first step towards progress, questioning, "Is it acceptable for us to still rely on any regional or international intervention to complete even one constitutional obligation?"

He pointed out that since 2005, no government or presidential or parliamentary elections have been conducted in a natural way that befits the Lebanese people, who deserve to have an identity and a homeland. He called for an end to the manipulation of the people and the trade of their rights and duties, which he asserted are not equal at all under a corrupt system that only protects sectarian and denominational merchants at the expense of true citizenship, which should equate citizens in rights and duties from the outset.

Arslan added, "What is called consensual democracy around all developmental, financial, and economic projects has led to the destruction and paralysis of everything at the expense of the Lebanese people's daily bread and their right to live dignified lives."

He concluded by saying, "A system that encourages complete subservience to the interests of others at the expense of our interests as Lebanese is a system that must be dismantled from its roots. We should not cover it up with the saying that the constitution has not been applied; a vague and fragile constitution that does not clearly define responsibilities cannot be the means of salvation. Let us shake off the dust of abhorrent sectarianism, denominationalism, and racism from our shoulders and build a homeland worthy of our children instead of a system that only encourages emigration, corruption, and degradation before it is too late."
