Syrian Foreign Ministry Rejects Turkish Decision to Open Istanbul University Branch North of Aleppo

The Syrian Foreign Ministry has rejected the Turkish government's decision to open a college and institute affiliated with Istanbul University in the town of al-Ra'i, north of Aleppo.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry issued a statement affirming Syria's complete rejection of the Turkish government's decision to open a college and institute in al-Ra’i. The statement emphasized that the Turkish decision constitutes a serious act and a blatant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter. It highlighted that the Turkish decision is a continuation of the Turkish government's practices in exacerbating and prolonging the crisis in Syria, as well as supporting parties and terrorist organizations such as the "Muslim Brotherhood," "ISIS," and "al-Nusra Front" to serve its agendas and achieve its Ottoman illusions.

Turkey had issued a decision to open a medical college and a higher Institute of Health Sciences in the town of al-Jouban (al-Ra’i) in the rural area of Aleppo, northern Syria. The decision was signed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and published in the official gazette on Saturday. The decision stated that the medical college and the higher Institute of Health Sciences would be affiliated with the Turkish University of Health Sciences in Istanbul.

The Turkish army, along with Syrian opposition groups allied with Turkey, managed to conduct operations in the region between the Euphrates River to the east and the areas controlled by rebels around Azaz to the west through "Operation Euphrates Shield," launched on August 24, 2016, occupying 2,055 square kilometers of territory in northern Syria, including al-Ra’i or al-Jouban.
