Lebanese Democratic Party Calls for Forensic Audit and Genuine Reforms to Halt Collapse

The political council of the "Lebanese Democratic Party" held a meeting chaired by party leader Talal Arslan, during which they discussed the political developments and the health and economic situation in the country.

A statement was issued by the council, which began by praising the "Khalda Meeting" held yesterday at the party leader's residence, as well as the outstanding national statement released by the attendees. This meeting is considered a true compass for the upcoming phase at the national level in general, and specifically concerning the mountain and the Druze community. The council emphasized that "the current health conditions in the country necessitate that we all dedicate ourselves to monitoring and addressing them, as well as the concerns of the people who are suffering from the state’s limited capabilities in the health sector, as in all sectors. This compels us to unite and strive through all means to secure alternatives and to continually rely on individual efforts to compensate as much as possible for the people. We also urge all our people in the mountain and all regions of Lebanon to register on the COVID-19 vaccination platform, contributing to the preservation of their health and that of their families and community."

The council stressed "the need to activate the state's regulatory work and the relevant security agencies on subsidized goods that are being monopolized by a large number of traders who are profiting from the people's health and pose a grave danger to the nation and citizens, comparable to the threat posed by those disrupting security and stability. Therefore, the strictest appropriate legal measures must be taken against them."

It reiterated that "the fundamental solution lies in resolving the current system, which gives rise to crises, and adopting a language of dialogue as a means to reach a system that rejects sectarianism, religious discrimination, and racial discrimination among the citizens of one homeland. Until this is achieved, everyone must unite, show solidarity, and rise above personal interests regarding the livelihood, health, security, and safety of the people. While we understand some valid concerns regarding the World Bank loan agreement for the establishment of a social safety net, we emphasize the importance of approving it as soon as possible, as it will help alleviate the burdens weighing on poor Lebanese families. We also see the necessity of limiting the task of identifying beneficiary families to the Ministry of Social Affairs according to criteria of transparency and objectivity."

The council concluded that "activating the forensic audit in all state institutions and achieving the desired reforms that have been mentioned on multiple occasions, as well as striving to support local productive sectors, are essential steps to halt the ongoing collapse or to limit its escalation; the essence remains in implementation."
