A video posted by Australian content creator Joshua Bloom on TikTok has gained significant popularity after revealing a trick many are unaware of regarding the fruits purchased from supermarkets. Joshua, from Sydney, explained that the labels on the fruit contain a number that consumers rarely pay attention to, which indicates how the fruit was grown. The four or five-digit codes reveal essential information, including whether the product was organically grown.
In the video, 25-year-old Joshua placed an apple, a lemon, and an orange side by side to compare the numbers on the labels of each. He stated, “This is something I learned when I was 25. I’m sure many of you eat fruit without noticing the code on the small labels. These small labels tell consumers how the fruit is grown.”
He added, “If you look closely, you’ll see that the label has a code consisting of four or five digits. A four-digit code means that the fruit has been sprayed with chemical pesticides. Meanwhile, a five-digit code that starts with the number eight indicates that the fruit is genetically modified.”
According to the website of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements, labels with four-digit codes starting with three or four signify that the fruit or vegetables were produced using conventional farming techniques.
Within 48 hours of its posting, the video received over a million views, along with thousands of likes and comments praising the information shared by Joshua, as reported by the Daily Mail.
