Startups valued at one billion dollars or more have become a significant indicator of innovation and investment strength in global economies.

These companies not only reflect the amount of funding attracted by new projects but also reveal the ability of countries to develop technology, attract investors, and provide an environment that supports the rapid growth of startups before transitioning to public markets.

This trend is clearly seen in the Hurun Global Unicorn Index 2026, which recorded 1,603 unicorn companies across 52 countries and 299 cities, with a total value of approximately 8 trillion dollars.

A unicorn is a private startup valued at one billion US dollars or more before being listed on the public stock market.

Attaining unicorn status does not mean the company has a billion dollars in cash; instead, it represents the company's estimated value based on funding rounds, investments, and investor evaluations.

This term is widely used in entrepreneurship and investment to describe fast-growing private companies, especially in technology, artificial intelligence, fintech, and software sectors.

According to Hurun's 2026 methodology, the classification includes companies founded in the current millennium with a valuation of at least one billion dollars and not yet listed on a public stock exchange.

How are Unicorn Companies Classified?

The classification of startups doesn't stop at the billion-dollar mark; other terms are used for companies exceeding higher valuations.

Unicorn: A private company valued at least one billion dollars.

Decacorn: A private company valued over 10 billion dollars.

Hectocorn: A company valued over 100 billion dollars.

These classifications differ from publicly-traded companies, as unicorns, according to the Hurun Index, have not yet entered public markets.
