Liverpool Eliminates Milan, Salah Sets New Record

Egyptian star Mohamed Salah, a player for Liverpool, set new records by scoring a historic goal against Milan in the match that ended with the Reds winning 2-1 in the final round of the group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the current season 2021-2022. The statistics and records network "Opta" reported that Mohamed Salah increased his tally to 7 goals during the group stage of the Champions League this season, becoming the record holder for the most goals scored by a player in a single season for the Reds in the group stage.

Moreover, the Egyptian Pharaoh became the first player in Liverpool's history to score in five group stage matches in a single season. Salah is also the first Liverpool player to score 20 or more goals for five consecutive seasons across all competitions, a feat last achieved by the legend Ian Rush, who did it for six consecutive seasons from 1981 to 1987.

Additionally, Salah became the second player to score in 7 consecutive away matches in the Champions League with his club, following Cristiano Ronaldo with Real Madrid between 2013 and 2014. He has scored more than 20 goals in all competitions every season since joining Liverpool, as follows:

- 2017/18 - 44 goals

- 2018/19 - 27 goals

- 2019/20 - 23 goals

- 2020/21 - 31 goals

- 2021/22 - 20 goals

Liverpool overcame an early deficit to knock Milan out of the UEFA Champions League after winning 2-1 at the San Siro Stadium, where goals by Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi from a second-string English side led them to finish the group stage perfectly. Milan needed a win to cling to hopes of qualifying for the Round of 16 and took the lead through English defender Fikayo Tomori in the first half.

However, Salah quickly equalized, scoring his 20th goal of the season across all competitions, and Origi, who netted the winning goal in injury time against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Saturday, scored Liverpool's second goal with a header after halftime.

Under coach Jürgen Klopp, the team became the first English club to win all their group stage matches in the Champions League in a single season, finishing at the top of Group B with 18 points. Milan finished last with four points in their first Champions League appearance since the 2013-2014 season, while Atlético Madrid defeated Porto 3-1 in another match, securing their place in the Round of 16 with a second-place finish with seven points, two points ahead of their Portuguese rivals.
