Minister of Information in the caretaker government, Dr. Manal Abdel Samad Najd, emphasized that "the decision for a gradual reopening, whether we agree with it or not, must be implemented thoroughly, otherwise there will be chaos."
In an interview with Al-Jadeed channel, the minister pointed out that Lebanon has different circumstances compared to other countries, particularly regarding the crushing economic situation that places a significant burden on citizens and results in social and psychological issues. Therefore, "it is essential to take this into account." She continued: The country can no longer endure further lockdowns, and if we demonstrate seriousness in adhering to the lockdown in the coming two weeks, there may be a reconsideration of the lockdown issue after that period.
Najd revealed that the Ministry of Information has agreed with the Ministry of Health and the National Vaccination Committee to prioritize journalists, as they are on the front lines covering events in the streets, within hospitals, and in ambulances. She noted that the World Health Organization has classified journalists in this category. Among journalists themselves, those working on the ground will be prioritized, followed by those working within media organizations such as anchors, editors, directors, and others. The registration process will be done sectorially, meaning journalists will not need to register through the platform; instead, the ministry will collect names and send them to the vaccination committee. The goal is to ensure all journalists receive the vaccine in the first phase.
Regarding the role of the Ministry of Information in launching the media plan, she indicated that "the ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization, UNESCO, and other partners, aims to provide accurate and transparent information to citizens and residents in Lebanon, enabling them to make informed decisions, especially amidst false information that causes public concern about a new pandemic." Therefore, it is crucial to raise awareness about the fears people have regarding the vaccine and its effectiveness, as well as the procedures being followed, ensuring transparency and objectivity in addressing this issue. Trustworthy scientific sources must provide reliable information regarding the vaccine, and media outlets should play a conscious role by hosting specialists and scientists and presenting scientific, factual material.
She added, "It is essential to highlight the measures taken by the state to demonstrate transparency through a clear plan and fair and transparent distribution based on objective criteria, along with oversight of these measures."
She concluded: "All media outlets, of various types, have played a significant role in the awareness process, helping us convince people and sometimes scare them into taking precautions against this dangerous and deadly pandemic. The shared responsibility requires that citizens be responsible guardians to ensure these measures are implemented, and it is crucial to raise awareness at the local authority level through scientific seminars conducted by doctors and specialists. Therefore, we must all participate in awareness and prevention efforts so that we can overcome this situation and restore normalcy for citizens to address their difficult living and economic conditions."
