Just hours after the end of the season, Liverpool star Mohamed Salah shared his thoughts on what his team has gone through in recent months. Liverpool defeated Crystal Palace 2-0 in their last match of the season on Sunday, securing a spot in next season’s Champions League by finishing in third place.
On his Facebook page, Salah posted a picture of himself with his teammates while congratulating Senegalese Sadio Mane, who scored both goals for Liverpool against Crystal Palace. Salah added a short comment: "We went through a lot this season… empty stadiums (because of the coronavirus), alongside the major obstacles we faced, which could have shattered any other team."
The star, who scored 22 goals for Liverpool in the league this season, stated: "We are not the ones (who can be shattered). In the end, we secured third place and never stopped believing in our abilities."
Salah did not mention anything regarding the race for the "Golden Boot" in the Premier League, which he lost in the final round to Tottenham's Harry Kane by a single goal scored against Leicester City. Salah had a theoretical advantage over Kane for the Golden Boot due to the easier final match, facing the "modest" Crystal Palace at home in Anfield, while Kane faced a tough opponent in Leicester City away, a team fighting to qualify for the Champions League; however, Tottenham won the match 4-2.
Salah had previously won the league’s top scorer title in his first two seasons with Liverpool (2017-2018 and 2018-2019), and winning it again would have made him the league's top scorer three times in the last four years, which is an impressive achievement.
The Egyptian star experienced a difficult season with Liverpool, marked by issues with his coach Jürgen Klopp, comments about his declining form, and talks regarding a potential move to the Spanish league, which he did not deny.
On Saturday, German coach Jürgen Klopp confirmed that Salah's strong desire to score has greatly benefited the club. Klopp told reporters before the match against Crystal Palace, "It's easy to imagine our situation without Mohamed Salah's goals."
The coach added, "The team helps him a lot, and he does a lot too. This comes from his desire and professionalism. His intense desire (to score) is what helps us a lot."
Salah is the only player in Liverpool who scored more than 9 goals in the league this season, while Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Diogo Jota each have only 9 goals. Klopp remarked, "This is truly a special year for him."
