Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro rejected threats from the U.S. administration to tighten sanctions against Venezuela if no progress is made in negotiations with the opposition, stating: "Their representatives can go to hell." He affirmed in an interview with Venezuelan state television that "the Venezuelan government rejects American threats and that the country has overcome the sanctions through its own efforts." A U.S. State Department official had previously stated that the United States might tighten sanctions against the Venezuelan government if no progress is made in dialogue with the opposition.
