Tunisian President Kais Saied has appointed Kamel Feki, the governor of Tunis, as the new Minister of the Interior, just hours after Tawfik Sharafeddine announced his resignation from the position. This comes amid a wave of arrests that included prominent opposition figures, drawing international criticism. Earlier this month, Feki refused to grant permission for the opposition Salvation Front to hold protests, citing that its leaders are implicated in conspiracies against state security. However, the Ministry of the Interior did not intervene and allowed access to Habib Bourguiba Street for demonstrations. Feki has repeatedly criticized the opposition, claiming it lacks ethics and influence. Sharafeddine was once considered one of the closest Tunisian officials to the president, but the two have not appeared together publicly much in recent months. In statements to journalists for publication in local media, Sharafeddine attributed his resignation to the need to care for his family following the death of his wife last year.
