France to Spend Two Billion Euros to Encourage Bicycle Use

French Transport Minister Clément Beaune announced today that the government plans to spend two billion euros, approximately 2.2 billion dollars, by 2027 to improve bicycle infrastructure in an effort to encourage its use and reduce car dependency. Beaune stated on his official Twitter account that the "state's efforts in cycling are enormous and unprecedented."

In an interview with the newspaper "Le Parisien," Beaune mentioned that the government aims to make bicycles an attractive alternative to cars and a means of transport available to everyone from an early age throughout their lives. He added that the goal is to increase the country's cycling path network from the current 50,000 kilometers to 80,000 by 2027, and to 100,000 by 2030, with priority given to cities outside the capital and rural areas, as larger cities have already received substantial state funding for cycling infrastructure.
