Security Agreement to Protect Borders between Iraq and Iran

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani today, Sunday, oversaw the signing of a joint security agreement between Baghdad and Tehran, aimed at coordinating efforts to protect the shared borders between the two countries and strengthening mutual cooperation in several security fields. In a statement issued by his media office, al-Sudani emphasized his "absolute rejection" of Iraq being a theater for the presence of armed groups.

According to the statement, al-Sudani met today with Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali Shamkhani, where they discussed "the relations between the two countries, the security and political situations in the region as a whole, and ways to enhance its security and stability." During the meeting, al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq's firm stance against Iraqi territory being a launch point for attacks on any neighboring countries, stressing his "absolute rejection" of Iraq being a theater for the presence of armed groups or a launching pad for targeting them, or any infringement on Iraqi sovereignty.

The meeting also touched on the recent agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, facilitated by China, where al-Sudani expressed Iraq's welcoming of this agreement and its readiness to provide whatever enhances the stability of the region. For his part, Shamkhani renewed his thanks for Iraq's role in this regard.
