Napoli Fans Celebrate Victory; One Dead and Seven Injured

Authorities in Naples announced today, Friday, that a person has died from injuries sustained from a gunshot and seven others were injured last night during the celebrations of the city’s team winning the Serie A title for the first time in 33 years. The celebrations began late after Napoli drew 1-1 away against Udinese, ensuring they secured the title with five matches remaining in the league.

Hours after the match, a person was killed by a gunshot, and Naples Governor Claudio Palumbo told "Rai" radio that "nothing can be done in the face of the celebrations." Italian news agency ANSA and other local media reported that friends and relatives of the victim vandalized the emergency room where he was taken. Palumbo added that the police are investigating the death, noting that seven people were injured that night, some due to fireworks.

Authorities implemented several measures to contain risks to public order during the wild celebrations in Naples following the team’s first league title since the era of Diego Maradona. The heart of the city was designated as a pedestrian zone, and authorities banned fireworks and firecrackers, but were unable to fully enforce this ban.
