The United Nations warned today, Wednesday, that about three-quarters of recent disasters worldwide are linked to water. During its first water security conference in nearly half a century, it called on governments to improve the management of this shared resource of humanity. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated during the meeting: "We are depleting the lifeblood of humanity through insatiable excessive consumption and unsustainable practices, evaporating due to global warming." He noted that a quarter of the world's population relies on unsafe drinking water and half lacks basic sanitation. He added, "I also urge countries to work together across borders to jointly manage water."
