Return of WTA Activities After Harassment Allegations

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) announced today, Thursday, that it will resume its activities in China, reversing its decision made in 2021 due to concerns regarding the safety of former world number one doubles player Peng Shuai. WTA CEO Steve Simon stated in a statement: "After 16 months of suspended tennis competitions in China and after implicit efforts to meet our primary demands, there are no signs of change in the situation." He added, "We have come to realize that we will never guarantee the full achievement of these goals, and our players and tournaments will pay a heavy price for these sacrifices." He continued, "While we do not regret our decision to suspend activities, members feel it is time to return to our activities in China." Concerns about Peng's safety arose in November 2021 after she claimed on social media that she was sexually assaulted by former Chinese Premier Zhang Gaoli.
