The French Ministry of Interior announced today, Wednesday, that the police arrested 16 people last night in connection with violence in the cities, indicating a further decrease in the scale of disturbances that swept through poor French suburbs following the police shooting of a young man last week. At the height of the unrest after the killing of the young Algerian by a security officer, the police arrested more than 1,300 people. The situation began to calm down on Sunday, with the number of arrests dropping to 81 on Tuesday night according to the ministry. The police officer who shot the Algerian Nahel Merzouk is in custody and faces a charge of intentional homicide.
