U.S. Navy Sends Nuclear Submarine to the Middle East

The U.S. Navy announced today, Saturday, that a nuclear-powered submarine equipped with guided missiles has been deployed in the Middle East to support the U.S. Fifth Fleet based in Bahrain.

Navy spokesman Timothy Hawkins stated in a statement that the USS Florida entered the region on Thursday and began transiting the Suez Canal. He noted that "the submarine is capable of carrying up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles and was sent to the U.S. Fifth Fleet to help promote maritime security and stability in the region."
