Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov indicated today, Friday, that all accredited foreign journalists can continue to work in Russia, following the detention of a reporter from the Wall Street Journal on espionage charges brought by the Russian Federal Security Service. He noted that Ivan Gerchikovich, the journalist ordered by a Moscow court to be held until May 29 in preparation for his trial, was engaged in espionage "under the guise" of journalism. Peskov confirmed that Gerchikovich "was caught in the act," but he declined to provide further details about the case, which remains confidential, even from the reporter's legal team. He also urged Washington not to retaliate by expelling Russian journalists working in the United States.
