South Korea Announces Results of Recovery of North Korean Rocket Debris

South Korea has recovered debris from a North Korean spy satellite and concluded that it is "militarily useless," according to the South Korean military. With this recovery, Seoul has ended a 36-day operation to retrieve the sunken debris following North Korea's failed launch of a space rocket in late May. The Joint Chiefs of Staff stated, "The military retrieved multiple key parts of the rocket and satellite through the operation that began on May 31 and concluded earlier today." Experts from South Korea and the United States conducted a detailed analysis of the debris and found that the satellite wreckage is of no military value, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. On May 31, North Korea launched the Chollima-1 rocket carrying the Malikyong-1 satellite, but it crashed into the sea due to abnormal engine rotation of the second stage, according to state media.
