The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Wednesday that Ankara summoned the German ambassador to express its condemnation of Germany's detention of two Turkish journalists working for the pro-government newspaper "Sabah." The Turkish foreign ministry stated that the journalists were arrested for coverage related to the network of U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gülen, following a complaint from a member of the network.
The German public prosecutor's office in Darmstadt reported that police searched the apartments of the two journalists, aged 46 and 51, in the town of Mörfelden-Walldorf, on suspicion of publishing sensitive personal data. The office stated that investigators seized electronic storage media and other devices, and although the men were detained, they were eventually released.
The Turkish Anadolu Agency reported that German police raided the office of the Sabah newspaper in Frankfurt before arresting the journalists.
