The Constitutional Court in Turkey has annulled the law that prevents married women from using their previous surname after marriage. The decision was made due to its violation of the principle of equality between men and women, and it will come into effect nine months from now. The Supreme Court decided to revoke the ruling in Article 187 of the Civil Code, which states that men and women enjoy equal rights and that the family is based on "equality between spouses." Under this ruling, women will no longer have to file a lawsuit to use their surname after marriage.
