Draft Law to Protect the Italian Language

The party of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has proposed imposing fines of up to 100,000 euros ($108,750) on public and private entities that use foreign terms, specifically English, instead of Italian in official communications. The draft law needs to be approved by the Parliament to become legislation. The text of the draft law states:

- The spread of the English language "diminishes" the value of the Italian language.

- All titles and abbreviations referring to positions in companies operating in Italy must be in the local language, allowing foreign words only when their translation is proven impossible.

This draft law comes just days after the government moved to defend what it considers another important part of Italian culture by banning food produced in factories to protect the country's agricultural food heritage.
