More than 40 People Killed in Attack on Displaced Persons Camp

A local official and the head of a civil society group in the Democratic Republic of the Congo indicated on Monday that more than 40 civilians were killed in an attack on a camp for displaced people in the Ituri province of eastern Congo. They stated: "The Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO), one of several militias active in eastern Congo, is responsible for the attack on the Lala camp."

The mayor of the Bahima Badjiri area, Jean Richard Linga, reported: "Militia members killed 46 people with knives and firearms, and burned others in their homes within the camp." He added: "The entire village is in mourning now. This is very sad, and the authorities are still searching for bodies." Charit Panza, the head of a civil rights group, noted that "the victims' bodies will be buried in a mass grave."
