Lawmakers in the U.S. state of Montana have passed a bill to ban the popular short video app "TikTok" from operating in the state, marking the latest threat to the app owned by Chinese company ByteDance within the United States.
The bill will prohibit mobile app stores from offering the download of "TikTok" to users in Montana. A total of 54 representatives in Montana voted in favor of the ban, while 43 opposed it.
" TikTok," along with "Apple" and "Google," which manage mobile app stores, could face fines for violating the ban if the bill becomes law.
The bill is now awaiting the signature of Montana Governor Greg Gianforte.
TikTok stated in a release: "We will continue to fight for the users and creators of TikTok in Montana, whose livelihoods and constitutional rights are threatened by this egregious government overreach."
