The 57-year-old senator, who was expected to enter the race since he formed a presidential exploratory committee in April, plans to officially launch his candidacy in his hometown of North Charleston, South Carolina. Over the past months, he has visited key states to gain momentum in securing the Republican nomination, emphasizing his Christian faith and conservative values acquired from his upbringing in a poor household with one absent parent. He also highlighted that he is the only Black Republican senator.
