EU Tightens Regulations on Artificial Intelligence Use

EU lawmakers approved amendments to a draft on artificial intelligence rules on Wednesday, which include a ban on using AI for biometric monitoring and require users of generative systems like ChatGPT to disclose content produced by them. The amendments to the historic bill proposed by the European Commission aim to protect citizens from the risks of technology that could clash with EU countries opposing a complete ban on using AI for collecting and analyzing individuals' biometric data.

The rapid adoption of the ChatGPT application, developed by OpenAI with support from Microsoft, along with other AI programs, has led prominent scientists and corporate executives to warn about potential risks that society may face due to it.

EU lawmakers want companies to disclose any copyright-protected materials used to train their AI systems and for those working on "high-risk applications" to assess their impact on fundamental rights and the environment.

Microsoft and IBM welcomed the latest action taken by EU lawmakers but are seeking further revisions to the proposed draft. A Microsoft spokesperson stated, "AI requires legislative barriers, international efforts, and voluntary measures from the companies that develop and deploy it."

Lawmakers will now have to discuss the details with EU countries before the draft rules become law.
