Under the Initiative of Morocco, the United Nations Celebrates Argan Tree Day

The United Nations celebrates the third International Argan Tree Day, focusing on its importance for rural communities that produce it, particularly rural women. This day aims to highlight the role of the argan tree in strengthening resilient communities, contributing to food security, and adapting to climate change, in addition to empowering rural women through the support and promotion of cooperatives and agricultural organizations.

In March 2021, the General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring May 10 as the International Argan Tree Day. The resolution was presented by Morocco and co-sponsored by a significant number of member countries, as part of the Kingdom's efforts to promote the argan tree as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity and a legacy source for resilient and sustainable development.

In the concept note for the celebration event, Morocco strives to preserve and develop community practices to manage the argan tree ecosystem sustainably, especially in the context of severe drought stress and increasing climate change. Furthermore, the Food and Agriculture Organization recognized in December 2018 the agrarian and pastoral system based on argan trees in Morocco as a globally significant agricultural heritage system.
