Russian Wagner Denies Any Involvement in Sudan

The Russian private military group Wagner denied on Wednesday any involvement in the events occurring in Sudan, stating that it "has no connection to the battles taking place in the African nation." Western diplomats in Khartoum had reported in March 2022 that "Wagner is involved in the illicit extraction of gold in Sudan along with other activities," which Sudan denied.

The group wrote on Telegram, "Due to a large number of inquiries from various foreign media regarding Sudan, most of which are provocative, we find it necessary to inform everyone that Wagner personnel have not been present in Sudan for over two years."

It added, "There has been no contact for a long time with the military governor of Sudan, the Chairman of the Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, or his deputy, the leader of the Rapid Support Forces, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemeti, whose forces are at the heart of the current conflict."

Furthermore, it mentioned that "the companies linked to the founder of the Wagner group have no financial interests in Sudan," stating that "the conflict is a purely internal Sudanese matter."
