Greg Berhalter has returned to coach the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team after nearly six months since his contract ended, leading the team into the 2026 World Cup, as announced by the U.S. Soccer Federation on Friday. The 49-year-old coach's contract with the national team ended on December 31 after guiding the team to the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The U.S. Soccer Federation stated, "Berhalter brings us nearly three decades of experience and a history with the U.S. national team as both a player and coach participating in the World Cup." The U.S. Soccer Federation faced internal conflicts after the Qatar tournament due to a dispute between Berhalter and U.S. midfielder Gio Reyna and his parents. Berhalter had made comments criticizing Reyna's commitment to the team during the World Cup, saying he even considered sending him home.
