The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Abul Gheit, visited both the Speaker of Parliament, Nabih Berri, and Prime Minister Najib Mikati. After meeting with Mikati, Abul Gheit confirmed from the governmental palace that the Arab Summit will take place in May next year in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is likely that the main topic of the summit will be economic, focusing on how to assist the Arab regions in need. He emphasized that the Saudi-Chinese-Iranian summit is very positive, with its initial impacts establishing a certain level of political and security stability between Saudi Arabia and Iran, although its effects on other issues in the region remain unclear.
For his part, Prime Minister Mikati underscored the importance of the summit adopting economic ideas and initiatives that contribute to achieving development goals in the Arab countries. He praised the role played by the Secretary-General of the Arab League and the general secretariat.
The discussion during the meeting also included the topic of the "Arab Forum for Sustainable Development," organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in collaboration with the Arab League and UN agencies operating in the Arab region. Local media reported that following his meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri, Secretary-General Ahmed Abul Gheit remarked: "There will be a president of the republic; it is a matter of time, and we must expedite this step because the situation is serious."
