A loud explosion was heard last night, Sunday, in Washington and its surrounding areas in the United States. The U.S. National Security Agency stated, "There are no threats at this time." Unconfirmed reports indicated that the sound of the explosion coincided with exercises being conducted by the U.S. military on air defense over the Chesapeake Bay. NBC correspondent Tom Lynch reported that residents called emergency services, as they were in a state of panic after the sound caused windows to shake and alarms to go off. Lynch later added, "Many local law enforcement agencies now believe that the source of the explosion heard around Washington was a 'sonic boom.'" The Chief of Police for Bowie, Maryland, tweeted that "reports of an explosion are reaching the communications center," adding, "No incidents have been verified of any kind."
