European Union Imposes Sanctions for Human Rights Violations in Crimea

The Council of the European Union announced today, Friday, the "imposition of additional sanctions on six individuals due to severe human rights violations related to their treatment of members of ethnic groups in the Crimean Peninsula." The list includes "representatives from the public prosecution and judges working in courts established by the Russian occupying forces in Crimea, who were involved in the sentencing of a journalist belonging to the Crimean Tatars." Among the list are also "two officials from the Russian Federal Security Service who either participated in the torture of the journalist or in investigations against him and members of the Crimean Tatar community or the Jehovah's Witnesses in Crimea."
