More than 200,000 buildings in Istanbul urgently need demolition or repair, according to preliminary results from inspections following the Kahramanmaraş earthquake. The Turkish newspaper "Milliyet" reported today that "half of the 35,000 scanned buildings have been classified as high-risk, while throughout the city, there are 207,000 buildings in desperate need of demolition or reinforcement, with 77,000 people living in these buildings." Additionally, Turkish seismologist, Naji Gorur, confirmed that "the residents of 100,000 buildings in the capital are at risk of dying under the rubble of their homes." Meanwhile, the newspaper "Hurriyet" stated that "people are waiting to die in 100,000 buildings in Istanbul. Let us take care of these people first and build homes for those whose lives are at risk."
