The Washington Post reported that a fire broke out in a dormitory at a school in the Republic of Guyana, located in the Caribbean region, with the number of victims estimated to be at least twenty children, and the death toll is still rising due to the intensity of the fire.
Guyana's President Irfaan Ali stated, "Many children lost their lives in a fire that broke out in a school dormitory late Sunday into Monday in Mahdia, a non-coastal mining-rich town in the center of the country." He added, "This is a major disaster. It is horrific and painful." Special and military planes have been sent to the area located 200 kilometers south of Georgetown in northeastern South America.
