Kuwait Appoints Ahmed Nawaf Al-Sabah as Prime Minister

Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported today, Tuesday, that "the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, has appointed Sheikh Ahmed Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah as Prime Minister." This step comes after the parliamentary elections held last Tuesday, in which a majority of traditionally opposing MPs won against previous governments.

The clash between the government and the National Assembly escalated again at the beginning of this year before the Supreme Constitutional Court annulled the 2022 elections and restored the 2020 parliament to its position as the legislative authority.

The Prime Minister is expected to form his new government and issue their appointment decree before June 20, when the inaugural session of the new parliament will take place. The government submitted its resignation last Wednesday following the election results, as the constitution mandates the reformation of the cabinet at the start of each legislative term of the National Assembly.

Kuwait has been experiencing ongoing conflict between the government and the parliament for years, particularly regarding the approval of public debt law, as the general budget relies on oil revenues for 90% of its funding.
