Bulgarians are casting their votes today, Sunday, in the fifth parliamentary election the country has experienced in two years amidst growing discontent with the political elite, which many believe lacks the resolve to confront corruption. Polls indicate that voting will likely leave Bulgaria without an effective parliamentary majority once again, casting doubt on its short-term ambitions to join the Eurozone and effectively utilize EU aid for recovery from the impact of the COVID pandemic.
In this election, a coalition that includes the right-leaning GERB party, led by former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov (63 years old), competes alongside its smaller partner, the Union of Democratic Forces, and a recently formed alliance of the party "Continue the Change" and the Democratic Reform Party of Bulgaria.
Polling suggests that the chances of the two coalitions are close, with the latest poll conducted by the Exakta research group showing them receiving 26.2% and 25.6% respectively, while the National Revival party received 12.8%.
