Israeli Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara stated today, Friday, that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu violated the law by saying he would personally intervene in a plan to reform the judicial system. She disagreed with him in a message addressed to him.
She said, "The legal position is clear: you must refrain from any intervention in initiatives to change the judicial system, including the formation of a committee to appoint judges, as such actions involve a conflict of interest."
She added, "Your statements last night and any action you take that violates this are illegal and characterized by a conflict of interest." This message came after the attorney general warned Netanyahu that he should stay away from his ruling coalition's efforts to implement judicial amendments, as she considers this a conflict of interest due to his trial on corruption charges.
A source close to Netanyahu, in a message distributed by the ruling Likud party, denied that the Prime Minister violated any laws or faced a conflict of interest in his statement, affirming that it has no implications for his trial. The source added that it is Netanyahu's duty to seek broader consensus during a time when Israel is facing a crisis with implications both domestically and internationally.
