What Does It Mean for Lebanon to Register a Quake at Zero Depth?

Geologist Tony Nimer clarified that an earthquake at zero depth means one of two things: either the depth was not accurately determined, resulting in a "gap," thus recorded as zero, or the fault is very shallow, reaching the earth's surface and moving close to the surface. This is not unusual for shallow marine faults that move due to the layer of rock salt in the Mediterranean Sea's subsurface. Nimer's explanation came in response to citizens' questions about geological data mentioning earthquakes in Lebanon, including one that occurred today, Thursday, at a depth of zero.
