Carlos Alcaraz narrowly defeated Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 in his first appearance at the Queen's tennis tournament today, recovering from his exit from the French Open. Rinderknech, ranked 87, advanced after his compatriot Arthur Fils withdrew and had a memorable match against the Spanish player in the first round.
Alcaraz stated: "It was a very difficult match. The grass is tough, but I love playing here. I want to compete in this tournament because it brings me to my best level. I haven't played any competition on grass before except Wimbledon, and I wanted to play here because I can't play on grass in my country, so I came here to prepare. I feel very comfortable, but I need to raise my game in the next round."
He will attempt to regain his ranking crown despite only playing on grass courts for the third time in his career.
