A leader of civil society in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo announced that Islamic militants tied up at least 19 villagers and killed them with machetes and other weapons in an attack on the region carried out late Sunday night. The Congolese army reported that they killed six militants that night without providing further details about the operation. The army spokesperson indicated that the number of civilian casualties is 11, but noted that this figure is preliminary.
