Death Toll from Wildfires in Hawaii Rising to 99

Rescue teams, assisted by trained dogs, have completed 25 percent of search and recovery operations in the disaster area of Lahaina on Maui Island, which has been ravaged by wildfires. They discovered another victim's remains, raising the total to 99 as of Monday; however, hundreds may still be missing nearly a week after the disaster. Maui County Police Chief John Pelletier indicated that "officials hope to finish search operations in 85 to 90 percent of the disaster area by early next week." Additionally, Hawaii Governor Josh Green stated that "aid is reaching those displaced by the fires," adding that there are "nearly 2,000 housing units available, including 400 hotel rooms, 1,400 Airbnb units, and 160 private homes."
