American billionaire and founder of OpenAI, Elon Musk, along with a group of AI experts and executives, urged in an open letter for a six-month pause on the development of systems more powerful than the recently launched ChatGPT-4, citing potential risks such applications pose to society. The letter, issued by the Future of Life Institute, stated: "Powerful AI systems should be developed only when we are confident that their effects will be positive and that their risks will be manageable." It added that such decisions should be entrusted to un-elected technology leaders. The EU's transparency register has revealed that the main funders of this nonprofit organization include Musk's foundation, the London-based Founders Pledge, and the Silicon Valley Community Foundation. More than a thousand individuals, including Musk, signed the letter.
These concerns arise as the ChatGPT chatbot has gained attention from U.S. lawmakers, who are questioning its impact on national security and education. Meanwhile, Europol warned on Monday about the danger of the application being used for attempted cyber fraud, spreading misinformation, and cybercrimes.
