Morocco... The People Want to End Inflation

Thousands of workers demonstrated today, Monday, in several Moroccan cities, chanting the slogan "The people want to end inflation" while demanding improvements in labor conditions. Hundreds of workers in the capital, Rabat, carried Moroccan flags and called for justice, equality, and social dignity.

Khalid El-Houari Alami, Vice General Secretary of the Democratic Confederation of Labor, stated that "the government has not fulfilled its commitments and has not provided effective answers to the social crisis, which is why the confederation decided to make this demonstration a moment of protest and a banner for continuing the struggle." He added, "The government is required to respect and implement its commitments and to respect trade union freedoms."

Yesterday, Younes Skouri, Minister of Economic Integration, Small Enterprises, Employment, and Competencies, said that "the government will work to increase the minimum wage in the industrial, commercial, and independent professions sectors by five percent, alongside an additional five percent for the agricultural sector." The minimum wage in Morocco is around 2970 dirhams (295 dollars). Dozens of workers also took to the streets in Marrakech, Tangier, and Fes, chanting slogans demanding improvements in social conditions.
