Fulham, competing in the English Premier League, announced on Friday the signing of Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey from Dutch club Ajax on a four-year contract. Fulham did not disclose the transfer fee, but British media estimated it to be around £21 million ($27 million). The 23-year-old Bassey has played ten international matches since making his debut for Nigeria last year. He previously played for Rangers, winning the league and cup and participating in the 2022 Europa League final, where they lost on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt. The player told the club's television: "I know the size of Fulham. They have great players, playing in the Premier League, the best league in the world, so I didn't think much before joining." Fulham finished last season in tenth place, the first time they have ended the season in the top half of the table since 2012.
