United reiterated in a statement, "Everyone at the club has had their hearts broken by the loss of our beloved former defender; all our love and condolences to his family." His daughter, TV presenter Hayley McQueen, wrote on Instagram: "Alongside my broken heart at the announcement of my wonderful dad's passing, I thought I would be ready for this day and would feel peace that he's no longer suffering from the awful illness, but I feel my senses are in paralysis." He retired from playing in 1985, then took on a coaching role at Airdrie before working as a television analyst.
