London police have opened an investigation into the alleged assault on former Manchester United captain Roy Keane, who is now an analyst for Sky Sports, at the Emirates Stadium following Arsenal's 3-1 victory over his former team on Sunday. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “We are investigating an incident that occurred at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, September 3rd, in which a man was assaulted.”
He added: “On Monday, September 4th, police arrested a 42-year-old man on suspicion of assault. He has been taken into custody, and inquiries are ongoing.” British media reports indicate that "Keane, aged 52, was assaulted by a fan during a scuffle," and in footage circulating on social media after the incident, Mika Richards, Keane's colleague at Sky Sports, is seen intervening with a man.
A spokesperson for Sky Sports stated on the network's website: "We understand that police are investigating an alleged assault by a fan that occurred just before the footage circulating on social media." He noted, referring to the former City defender who works with Keane, that "in the published footage, Mika Richards was acting to defuse the situation." Arsenal has announced that it is aware of the incident. In turn, a spokesperson for Arsenal indicated that "the Metropolitan Police are investigating this incident, and we are fully cooperating with the inquiries."
