The US Treasury Department announced that it has imposed additional sanctions on Myanmar, targeting the supply of aviation fuel following airstrikes in civilian areas. It confirmed that sanctions were placed on two individuals and six entities linked to the Myanmar Army, which Washington accuses of enabling the military to continue its atrocities by supplying, storing, and distributing aviation fuel to the army. Since the military coup in February 2021, Myanmar has descended into chaos, with an opposition movement engaged in conflict with the army on multiple fronts after a bloody crackdown on dissent. The Treasury accused the army of continuing to commit atrocities and violence against the people of Myanmar since the coup, adding that its reliance on airstrikes in civilian areas is increasing. It cited an airstrike on the town of Let Yet Kone that hit a school, and another strike in Kachin State in the north of the country that resulted in the deaths of around 80 people. The Myanmar Embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment.
