Trump Sues Writer E. Jean Carroll for Defamation Following Rape Allegations

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against writer E. Jean Carroll, accusing her of defamation weeks after his appearance before a jury in her rape case. Trump submitted a countersuit on Tuesday night, claiming that Carroll harmed his reputation by publicly accusing him of rape during her appearance on CNN, despite jurors concluding that his actions during the alleged assault in 1996 did not amount to that level of crime. A jury consisting of 6 men and 3 women found last month that Trump was liable for sexual assault but not for rape, awarding Carroll $5 million in damages. Trump is also facing several other lawsuits, including more than 20 charges related to payments made to silence a pornographic film actress and an investigation into his alleged role in inciting the U.S. Capitol riots in 2021.
