Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou has approved a request from Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Saturday to dissolve parliament and hold elections on May 21, as the country prepares for a vote that is unlikely to yield a clear winner. Mitsotakis announced the election date during a cabinet meeting in late March, just a few months before the official end of his term in July. He informed President Katerina Sakellaropoulou on Saturday that parliament will be dissolved on April 23. The elections will be conducted under a proportional voting system, and opinion polls indicate that neither the ruling New Democracy party led by Mitsotakis nor the left-wing opposition party Syriza is likely to secure the votes necessary for an outright parliamentary majority. If the winning parties fail to form a coalition government, another vote will take place in early July.
