Nikkei Closes Higher

The Japanese Nikkei index closed higher on Tuesday, as gains from bank stocks and chip-related companies offset sell-offs driven by losses in Hong Kong and other regional exchanges. The Nikkei index rose 0.32% to close at 32,493.89 points in its first trading day after a three-day holiday in Japan. The index increased by as much as 1% at the beginning of trading, following gains on Wall Street; however, weak stock performance after the opening of Chinese markets led the Nikkei index to dip into the red during the afternoon trading session in Tokyo. The financial sector led the gains on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, with its index rising 2.18%, significantly outperforming 32 other sector indices on the exchange.
